Ex-Bear Becker plays way into Cincinnati tourney
Monday, July 28, 2008 CINCINNATI — Benjamin Becker played his way into one of the biggest tennis tournaments of the year with a straight-set victory in Sunday’s final round of the qualifier at the $2.6 million Western and Southern Financial Group Masters. The former Baylor all-American and 2004 NCAA champion served up six aces and got four breaks in a 7-6 (1), 6-1 victory over George Bastl to reach the 64-player main draw that starts today. Baylor junior Denes Lukacs lost to Korean Woong-Sun Jun in the first round of the qualifier on Saturday. Jun lost to Australian Chris Guccione, 6-4, 6-3, on Sunday. Becker, ranked 111th in the world, will face 86th-ranked Florent Serra of France in the first round for a chance at second-ranked Rafael Nadal. The reigning French and Wimbledon champion defeated Becker, 7-5, 6-2, at the ATP Masters Series tournament earlier this year in Miami.

Becker beats Pless in first round Indy Tennis
Germany’s Benjamin Becker topped Denmark’s Kristian Pless 6-3, 6-4 in today’s first round action in the Indianapolis Tennis Championships. “I won the first set and felt good about it,” Becker said. “He came back and played a little better in the second set and broke me at 2-all. I lost my concentration a little. Obviously, you don’t want to go three sets.” Becker broke Pless’ serve to tie at 4-all.
“That was crucial, it broke him down a little bit,” Becker said. “I felt better about my game and it worked out at the end.”

Davydenko crashes to Becker
Fourth seed Nikolay Davydenko tumbled out of Wimbledon at the first hurdle, beaten in straight sets by Germany's Benjamin Becker. A break of serve in each set was enough to give Becker a 6-4 6-4 6-4 victory on Court Two and maintain Davydenko's dismal record at the All England Club. The Russian becomes the highest ranked player to be eliminated in this year's first round. It was Davydenko's fifth first-round exit in seven visits to Wimbledon - his best run coming last year when he made it through to the last 16. However, it was back business as usual on Court Two today as Becker - hardly brimming with grand slam pedigree having lost in the first round of his last six majors - made a mockery of Davydenko's lofty ranking. The German seized control of the match from the start, serving consistently and never once losing his advantage as he marched into the second round. "Losing my serve in first, second and the third sets... it doesn't matter against who I play, I need to play well. I need to have my serve going well and the return also needs to be as good as possible but today my return was really bad," Davydenko said. (source)

Becker, Dorsch advance in singles
BATON ROUGE, La. — Former Baylor teammates and NCAA champions Benjamin Becker and Benedikt Dorsch took different roads to the second round of the $50,000 Price Leblanc Lexus Pro Tennis Classic. While the top-seeded Becker made quick work of Gary Lugassy, 6-1, 6-1, for the second straight week, Dorsch survived two tiebreakers and three sets to knock off wild-card entry Ryan Sweeting, 6-3, 6-7 (1), 7-6 (4), on Monday. After a day off, Dorsch will draw third-seeded Igor Kunitsyn, and Becker will face the winner of a match today between qualifier Martin Fischer and lucky-loser entry Izak van der Merwe. http://www.wacotrib.com/sports/content/sports/college/2008/04/22/04222008wacbuextennis.html
