After winning a hard fought 64 76 match against Gabashvili on Monday BB enjoyed a few days in the spotlight of his home country's tournament, doing various interviews and appearances on behalf of the tournament. On Wednesday he partnered with countryman Chris Kas, but fell to Soderling and Kohlschreiber 64 75.
The tournament scheduled his 2nd round match last on Thursday...leaving the winner as the final man to reach the quarterfinals with Jarkko Nieminen waiting in the wings.
Gicquel came out firing and broke Benni immediately, racing out to a 3-0 lead. After breaking Benni to close out the first set, Gicquel easily held serve and was up love-15 on Benjamin's serve before something happened that both men will remember for the rest of their lives. Benni blasted a serve that was called out and Gicquel went down as if he'd been punched by Mike Tyson square. The poor guy got nailed in the family jewels and was in severe pain.
Benni showed class by making sure his opponent was ok. Of course he wasnt...well he was, but not so quickly. A 10-minute injury timeout ensued.
Fortunately for Benni this broke Gicquel's momentum and he was able to get on track and actually came within inches of breaking Gicquel and have a chance to serve for the second set. Unfortunately he could not convert on any break points and lost a tough tiebreaker 7-5.
Benni moves on to the Ordina Open in S'Hertogenbosch, Holland...before traveling to London for Wimbledon.
