TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Former Baylor standout Benjamin Becker knocked off 150th-ranked Tomas Cakl, 6-4, 6-0, Tuesday to reach the second round of the $50,000 Tallahassee Challenger tennis tournament.
Becker, ranked 213th in the world, will face No. 246 Cecil Mamiit of the Philippines today in a match-up of former NCAA singles champions. Mamiit, who won the title in 1996 at Southern Cal, advanced with a 7-6 (8), 3-6, 6-3 win over Lesley Joseph on Monday. Becker, the 2004 NCAA champ, won the only previous meeting between the players, 6-4, 7-6 (0), last month in the first round of qualifying at the Tennis Channel Open in Las Vegas.
Former BU teammate Benedikt Dorsch lost his first-round match to Italy’s Uros Vico on Tuesday, 6-7 (10), 6-0, 6-4. Dorsch, who reached the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals of the three Challengers he played last fall, has not won a main-draw match in six Challengers this season.
Becker, meanwhile, is now 22-3 this season in Challengers, including 13-3 in main-draw matches. He has jumped almost 200 spots on the ATP computer in the last two months after reaching the semifinals in Dallas, the finals in Joplin and winning his first Challenger title two weeks ago in Salinas, Ecuador.
